For over 100 years the Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl football game has been part of a tradition to ring in the New Year. The Tournament of Roses, also colloquially known as the Rose Parade, is part of the annual New Year’s Day tradition held in Pasadena, California. The event has been going on since 1890 and is a beloved event by locals and visitors alike. The parade consists of floats that are decorated using flowers and other natural items such as seeds. The result is an exquisite and creative showcase of prades. Each year, there is also a theme that all parades adhere to. This year, the theme for the 2018 Rose Parade will be, “Making a Difference”. According to Rose Parade President, the theme is about “the human acts of kindness that enrich the lives of others and are the source of inspiration, hope, joy and optimism for all of us”. The Grand Marshal for the 2018 parade will be actor and humanitarian Gary Sinise, most recognized for his role as Lt. Dan Taylor from the film, Forrest Gump. In addition to the floats, the parade includes equestrian units and marching bands from local high schools and more. After the parade, the Rose Bowl College football game occurs at the Rose Bowl Stadium.
The Rose Bowl has been a long standing tradition since 1902 to cap off the New Year’s Day celebrations after the parade. This annual bowl game is for American college football teams and traditionally hosts the conference champions from the Pac-12 and the Big Ten conferences. This year, The No. 2 CFP ranked University of Oklahoma will take on the No. 3 CFP ranked University of Georgia, which is sure to be an exciting game. The Rose Parade is set to start at 8am and the Rose Bowl is scheduled to take place at 2pm.
